  • 4 slices thick sourdough bread
  • 4 oz thinly sliced ham
  • 4 oz Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for spreading)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour until smooth to create a roux. Gradually add 1 cup of milk, whisking continuously until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  3. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, layer ham and Gruyère cheese generously.
  4. Top with another slice of bread and press gently.
