Description

Indulge in the warmth and nostalgia of Traditional Hot Cross Buns, perfectly fluffy and spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. These golden-brown treats, dotted with currants and finished with a sweet icing cross, are ideal for any occasion. Whether enjoyed fresh from the oven or toasted with butter, they promise to fill your home—and heart—with delightful comfort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 ½ cups warm whole milk (110°F)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup currants or raisins
  • 1 cup icing sugar (for cross)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk and yeast; let sit until frothy (about 5 minutes).
  2. Mix flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter; stir until combined.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Punch down the dough and fold in currants/raisins. Divide into equal pieces and shape into balls.
  6. Arrange buns on a lined baking tray; cover and let rise for another 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before drizzling with icing sugar mixed with water.
